Diomedes was a physician, and teacher of the faith. He is considered to be one of the Holy Un-mercenaries (he never took payment for his services). He was accused to Diocletian who according to legend ordered his murder. However, when the cohort arrived to take Diomedes he had already died a natural death. The soldiers cut off his head – I guess to take credit for his killing, and not get into trouble with the emperor – but they were struck blind for having done so. When they presented the head to Diocletian he appears to have had a moment of humanity and ordered them to return the head to Diomedes. When they returned the head to Diomedes’ body – their sight was restored.
