Frumentius was a Phonecian, early in the fourth century he accompanied his uncle to Abyssinia by ship. The crew was massacred in port, and the young Frumentius became a slave in the court of the King of Axum. Frumentius gained the king’s favour, and when he died Frumentius gained his freedom. The widowed Queen however, asked him to assist in administration during the minority of her son, the heir to the throne. Frumentius agreed and during the regency period used his status to spread the faith. He encouraged visiting Christian merchants to practice openly, through his efforts a number of locals converted.
When the king came of age, Frumentius was released, and began his journey home. He stopped in Alexandria to ask Athanasius to send clergy to Axum. Athanasius recognised that Frumentius was the right man for the job – and had him consecrated. The date of Frumentius’ consecration is debated – it could be as early as 328, or as late as 346.
Frumentius returned to Axum and began to establish the faith there in earnest. He baptised the King, and spread the faith throughout the country. Frumentius died around AD383.
